Part Time Instructor / Conductor

Kalamazoo College seeks a dynamic conductor and teacher to conduct the symphonic band each term, conduct the jazz band each term, and teach woodwind/brass/percussion instrumental methods (a high-enrolling course for beginners and music majors on secondary instruments) annually in the spring term. While we are seeking coverage for all three courses, we encourage candidates with skills/availability for only some of these areas to still apply. This is a part-time, potentially benefits-eligible position to begin in fall of 2024, with an initial one-year contract that may be renewable. Taken together, all roles maximally average to 25 hours a week, which includes jazz band (3 hours/week of rehearsal plus additional preparation), symphonic band (3 hours/week of rehearsal + preparation), the methods course (4 hours/week class time + preparation in spring trimester only), and some modest departmental administrative work.

Requirements:

  • Master’s or Doctoral Degree preferred; Bachelor’s in music with relevant experience considered.
  • Experience conducting/teaching at the collegiate or high school setting, and an eagerness to work with musicians at all levels.

We encourage applications from candidates whose intellectual and pedagogical approaches are effective in attracting and retaining students from historically underrepresented groups. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to working with students, faculty and staff from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
