The dual identity of student-athletes can create tension as the demands of being in class and the demands of competition are sometimes in direct conflict. The College is committed to working with student-athletes to help navigate these challenges when possible. In particular, faculty are expected to: allow student-athletes up to 3 absences due to competitions without penalty, even if this exceeds course policy; to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to make up required in-class assignments for those days.
There are also expectations on student-athletes. In particular, student-athletes are expected to communicate conflicts between dates of competition and class meetings to their professors at the beginning of the term; to communicate any changes to that schedule as soon as they are made; to ask their professors for any assignments or content they can make up; to not miss more than 3 class days. If dates of competition require more missed class than this (or if other non-sports related additional absences push absences above this) student-athletes should understand that they may face tough choices and their academic work, athletic performance, or both, may suffer.
